The SOEP is a wide-ranging representative longitudinal study of private households. It provides information on all household members, consisting of Germans living in the Old and New German States, Foreigners, and recent Immigrants to Germany. The Panel was started in 1984. In 2008, there were nearly 11,000 households, and about 22,000 persons sampled. SOEP is part of CNEF (Cross National Equivalent File) which contains comparable panel data for Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland and the United States.
Some of the many topics include household composition, occupational biographies, employment, earnings, health and satisfaction indicators. The data can be used not only for basic academic research, but also for policy-related social reports directed to a broader audience. SOEP data make it possible to test a wide range of economic and social theories as well as psychological theories.
The SOEP data are available to researchers in Germany and abroad in SPSS, SAS, and STATA format for immediate use. They are disseminated in different packages alone or in combination with international data. Extensive documentation in English and German is available online.
