Policies for Happiness
Diffuse dissatisfaction, psychological malaise, unease: this is the distressing picture that emerges from the research of various social sciences, on "happiness" in countries with the highest degree of development. Why have wealthy countries not been able, and are not able now, to conjugate economic development and well-being? Why does the data highlight that not only has happiness not increased in the post-WWII years but that in certain cases, as for the Unites States, it has actually decreased? This Workshop documents the situation and analyzes the causes and the solutions for present-day dissatisfaction, identified by economists, psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists. The heart of the problem is that economic development has gone hand in hand with a progressive impoverishment of our emotional and social relationships. Our economic system and many aspects of our experiences, both individual and collective, from family life to the job, from the media to urban life, school, the caring for children and healthcare, require a deep cultural and organizational change. This Workshop charts out some guidelines.
